Born in Halberstadt, Germany, Gottlieb Christian Gottfried Daniel Toepperwein (b. 1767) was the son of Paul Siegmund Toepperwein and Johanna Catharina Elizabeth Hanisch. Following his father’s death when Toepperwein was three years old, his mother married Toepperwein’s stepfather Friedrich Rühland.
